In September 2023, we saw over 9,800 classic and exotic vehicles cross the auction block – a record for any September since we started tracking. However, only 63% of these vehicles were sold successfully, at an average price slightly shy of $47K. In fact, we saw a decline in every key metric except for the number of listings.
This is a trend we've noted consistently throughout the year. While the Pandemic stood out as an exceptional time for sellers, 2023 has brought a more balanced market where the interests of buyers and sellers align. Although we are seeing marginal dips in Dollar Volume and Average Price when compared to 2022, this reflects a stabilization from the over-heated market during the Pandemic, not a panic-inducing trend. The overall sales figures indicate a healthy, steady market.
The recurring patterns that we've seen throughout 2023 imply that the market is navigating towards a new stability: online sales maintaining a prudent 60% sell-through rate with listings varying across all value tiers and conservation type, while traditional live auctions are reserved for select, top-tier vehicles.
Top 10 Sales in September 2023
Half of September's Top 10 sales crossed the block at Gooding & Company's London Auction, and we also saw two 7-figure sales from online auctions (one each for PCARMarket and Bring a Trailer).

Top 10 Flips & Flops in September 2023
A "Flip" or "Flop" is defined as a car for which we have a previous sale record, so we can determine the net gain/loss and time since the previous sale. Obviously, it's possible that cars have changed hands in private sales between these public listings, but it still provides great insight into the market to see which cars sold for substantial gains or losses over their previous sales.
