Auction Results: April 2024

With spring in full swing, the classic and collector car market is gearing up for activity. 9,150 cars crossed the auction block in April, with 68% finding buyers, resulting in a total dollar volume of $291 million – slightly surpassing the last year’s figures for the same month. Gooding and Company’s Mullin Collection and Broad Arrow’s Porsche Auction at Air | Water had standout sales, and the online auctions showed remarkable results, nabbing 3 of the Top 10 Sales.

As outlined in our Q1 report, online auctions remain the primary drivers of growth in both Sold Listings and Dollar Volume, drawing in more participants and transactions for their daily events with low barrier to entry. However, live auctions maintain their significance with notable high-value sales and higher sell-through rates.

The classic and exotic car market is gradually stabilizing from its peak in 2022, offering excellent opportunities for both buyers and sellers. Join us as we delve into the top-level data in the charts below, and follow your favorite market all month long on CLASSIC.COM.

April Breakdown

Overall, Dollar Volume at auctions increased 4% year-over-year. Online auctions exhibited stronger growth than live auctions, with a 6% increase compared to 1%, respectively.

Similarly, Sold Listings showed a year-over-year increase of 7%, predominantly fueled by online auctions. Sold Listings in online auctions surged by 12%, whereas live auctions experienced only a marginal 1% growth.

Although live auctions aren't experiencing the same widespread growth as online auctions, they excel in higher Average Price and Sell-through Rate. While both metrics are stabilizing industry-wide, they notably remain substantially higher in live auctions compared to online.

Top 10 Flips & Flops in April 2024

Each month, we track "Flips" and "Flops," which we define as cars with documented previous sale records. This enables us to calculate the net gain or loss and the time elapsed since the last sale. While some purists argue that a genuine Flip/Flop occurs only within a 12-month timeframe from the previous sale, we believe this list offers entertainment and valuable insights that a narrower window would overlook. Admittedly, it's plausible that cars have changed hands in private transactions between these public listings; nonetheless, this data provides valuable insights into which cars have realized significant gains or losses compared to their previous sales. Enjoy this data at your own discretion.
